Nicolas Cage Arrested

I was very disappointed to read that mega star Nicolas Cage was arrested early Saturday morning. I am not an enthusiastic fan of Hollywood or its stars. Though I do enjoy watching several actors, a few I even admire -- some alive, some not. I am not awed by Hollywood glitter and I have no particular desire to "do lunch" with a denizen of Tinsel Town. Nevertheless, I sincerely admire talent. Cage is talented and I thought that I "perceived" kindness and sincerely in his face. Perhaps, I was mistaken; he may be a brilliant actor—a chameleon.

The Academy-Award winning actor was arrested down in the Big Easy and charged with domestic abuse and disturbing the peace. According to news accounts, Cage grabbed his wife by the arm and tried to drag her to a house he believed they had rented in the famous France Quarter—this was late at night. She disagreed with his choice and they argued about this difference of opinion. Someone called the police. This is not Cage's first official encounter with law enforcement. These behaviors were reported by the media—the details may or may not be consistent with the facts.

Troubling Financial Issues?

Some articles suggest that Cage has had worrisome challenges recently, including major rumblings from the IRS and a former wife. How much of his financial misfortune can be attributed to questionable choices is unknown. ABC News reported that Cage's former financial manager Sam Levin told TMZ that Cage has

...15 palatial homes around the world, four yachts, a Gulfstream jet and millions of dollars in jewelry and art.

Self-Control

Several articles on Cage propose that he may have an unpredictable temper which he is likely to lose when frustrated. In the New Orleans incident, reporters indicate that Cage was intoxicated and jeered cops, saying, "Why don't you just arrest me?" Officers agreed and complied.

Personality of a Movie Character

I was not in New Orleans with Cage last Saturday and I have never met him. Therefore, I cannot know if the events happened as they were reported. I have learned not to believe everything I read. That said, let's say someone, other than Cage, behaved in the way Cage has been reported to act—in fact, let's say a character in a movie. What would these behaviors tell us about this character's personality?

We could say he or she may have poor impulse control, perhaps exacerbated by alcohol. In addition, we might suspect he or she has narcissistic tendencies. Logically, we could intimate that the character exhibits poor judgment in a variety of circumstances. Long-term Intimate relationships would probably not be in the script for this character. Abuse is appallingly disrespectful, unhealthy, and illegal—even in Hollywood.

A fictional character's fate is cast by the script. A human being has choices.

I Do Not Know Nicolas Cage

I do not know any facts about Nicolas Cage. Therefore, I cannot comment on his behavior or his personality. To do so would be unfair and unprofessional. For Cage's sake and his wife's sake I genuinely hope that media coverage has been erroneously pessimistic. He has a nice face—don't you think?
