Have You Been Struck By Love at First Sight?
Published on April 30, 2008
Hollywood and romance novelists would like you to believe that you know he is your "one true love" the moment you set eyes on him (or her). If that "one true love" happens to be an awesome hotty, then the hammering in your head and the quaking in your boots may be due to hormones, not love. One researcher indicated that we can fall in love in less than 8 minutes. Another study appears to suggest that if we stare into the eyes of our love (or lust) interest for a few minutes we might make romantic progress.
You might ask, "What difference does it make if the semi-psychotic symptoms are lust or love?" It matters because a recent study, and others over the last few years, suggest that lust is more short lived than genuine, solid gold love. The brief lust shelf life is due to chemical reactions that can only be sustained for a relatively fleeting period of time. Reality seems to dim the reaction and, sadly, the fantastically powerful chemicals dissipate. This may leave you looking at Mr. Hunk wondering why you choose a guy who can't remember to call when he will be late, leaves his clothes in a straggling mass of grand proportions—and cannot sustain his, ah… enthusiasm.
If you are a guy, then you may have noticed that the Ms. Hotty of 6 months ago, flirts outrageously with your friends and will eat at only the most posh restaurants—though she consumes a single lettuce leaf. Now, Ms. H tells you that the awesomely cool Lars (from the gym) is teaching her to kick box. Ouch!
When the chemicals are gone the chemicals are gone. Has this happened to you? If you are experiencing chemicals at first sight you have probably done it more than once.
Let's take the test and determine if you are a chemically charged romantic.
