Are You a Fire Cracker or a Rock?

Published on September 8, 2008

Relationships and careers are built on a foundation of emotional maturity. No matter how attractive, witty and intelligent we might be, these things mean virtually nothing unless we have learned to control our emotional responses to life. True, we are drawn to cool and humorous individuals, be assured, these attractions wear thin very quickly if his or her emotional maturity is marginal -- or worse. Emotions are the icing on the cake, Corvette in the garage and aged, enchanting cabernet in the goblet for our species. Without our virtually unlimited variety of feelings we would be little more than soft, well dressed robots. Nonetheless, emotions have the potential to become California wild fires, burning out of control and destroying everything in their path.

Let's take the test and gain insight into our emotional maturity level.

1. I share my thoughts and feelings with others.

2. If I feel melancholy, I know why

3. If I am angry with a friend, I attempt to resolve the issue.

4. I try to do my best and feel good about my efforts.

5. I believe that I should handle my problems, but I talk them other with others.

6. I avoid jealously in relationships (including career).

7. I cope well with rejection, though I don’t enjoy it.

8. I like myself.

9. When people find fault with me I realize their behavior is beyond my control and I am OK with that.

10. I look for solutions rather than just worrying.

11. I fully understand that I have no control over other people.

12. I have the capacity to change and adjust.

13. I have few tension/stress symptoms.

14. I enjoy giving, though I also appreciate receiving.

15. I have the capacity to relate to people in a consistent, cooperative manner.

16. I can convert hostile energy into productive enthusiasm.

17. I have the capability to love and accept love.

  • May 1, 2011, 7:11 am - Liam I subconsciously knew how to get 17 out of 17, first time, by just the phrasing of the question and then simply thinking is "yes" or "no" the most emotionally mature response. It wasn't much of a test in that it was very hard not to foresee the right and wrong answer with all 17 questions.
  • May 16, 2011, 7:28 pm - Marge Velasquez I find your tests well constructed but your conclusions are totally out of harmony with my answers. You find many false positives in my miserable, socially-avoidant life and provide little advice that I might find useful even if I were able to implement them. Your conclusions, being so falsely positive, leave me feeling more hopeless than ever.
  • June 2, 2011, 5:16 pm - Dr. Dorothy Hi Marge
My interpretations are positive because it is the way I see people and the world. In my experience as a therapist people are quite capable of meaningful change. Perhaps, we are both correct, you may see the "what is" and I see the "what could be."
I don't know which profile you read, but I made several recommendations. Remember, these recommendations are meant to be general. Have you tried all of the recommendations?
    I wish you well.
