Do You Listen with a Loving Ear?

Published on March 15, 2011

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. — Rita Rudner

Listening is an art. Ears, auditory canals, ear drums and other miscellaneous support apparatus come as standard equipment on the basic human being. We have the first step down to a science—we can hear. For some mysterious reason, we humans underutilize our hearing apparatus. Hearing is standard, listening is a choice.

Think about it. Do you remember the last time someone actually paid close attention to what you said, looked at you, nodded now and again, and did not interrupt you with questions or comments? As a psychotherapist, I can assure you, many of the unheard are willing to pay serious money-- simply to be heard.

Are you a gifted listener? Let's take the quiz and find out if listen.

1. Sure I’m busy, but I find the time to listen to troubled friends and family.

2. I have many friends who actually, phone, text, e-mail and visit me.

3. I am a sensitive person -- I am so tuned in to people I can finish their sentences -- even folks I barely know.

4. I wonder about my friends, they swear they told me stuff they never said -- really weird people.

5. Don’t you just hate people who can't get to the point? I mean they just go on and on and they never say anything that means anything. You hear what I am saying, just on and on, man. I mean, man, what is the point?

6. I did well in lecture classes in school.

7. When I am concentrating on someone I just naturally lean forward and make eye contact.

8. When we are planning an evening out my sweetie reminds me where and when we are meeting numerous times. True, I am late, or go to the wrong place sometimes, but not every time.

9. Just to be certain I understand what someone is telling me, I will paraphrase what he/she says to "reality test."

10. I check out my e-mail while talking on the phone, I find that I save 1.2 hours a day by communication multitasking.
