Do You "Wow" Employers With Your Great Interview Skills?

Published on July 3, 2008

Accomplishing the impossible only means the boss will add it to your regular duties. -- Doug Larson

A resume is important in getting that all-important "interview." After you get the interview, an entirely new set of sills I needed to make the transformation from beach bum to gainfully employed. Most of us know that one should not chew bubble gum and blow bubbles during an interview - unless, of course, the company for which you are interviewing is the Wrigley gum Company. Even then, it would be risky and not recommended for the faint of heart. One of the important lessons to learn is: what is appropriate when applying to one prospective employer may not be appropriate for another interview. Consider the company and the position for which you are applying when making decisions about your attire and approach. A black leather flight jacket and boots (thought totally cool) are probably not a good idea, unless you are applying to Harley-Davidson. Even then, if the job your eagerly anticipate is vice president, I would strongly consider wearing a Ralph Lauren Suit (ok, even Brooks Brothers).

Let's see if you are executive material. Mark either "yes" or "no" for your answer. Then consult the scoring instructions at the end of the test. Good luck!

1. When preparing for an interview, do you research the company?

2. Since you know all about yourself, do you thoroughly review your resume?

3. Since you want to be perceived as a skilled and popular "people" person do you leave your cell phone on during an interview?

4. Do you take up part of your interview asking questions about the hiring company?

5. Do you discuss salary during the interview?

6. If asked about your weaknesses, do you say that you have none?

7. Do you dress casually for the interview, so they won’t think you are obsessive?

8. Do you wear clothes in bold, cheerful colors, hoping they will think y are friendly, open and fun?

9. Do you tell the interviewer how many resumes you have sent out, so she will think you are in demand?

10. Do you use your very best manners in an interview?
