Do You Dance on Tables or Stand in the Shadows?

Published on July 16, 2008

Barbara was terrified as she looked around the crowded room. The faces blurred into an inhuman mass. She felt trapped much like the squirrel she had noticed in the street on her way to the party. The frightened little creature stared straight at Barbara's headlights, frozen in place - unable to respond. "Why did I let Judy talk me into coming to her party? I knew this would happen. It always does... what is wrong with me?" Barbara's hands felt clammy. Heat was throbbing in her face as a vivid crimson edged upward from her neck toward her forehead. Thump, thump, thump -- her heart was beating against her ribcage with such force that she was terrified to move. Breathing was agonizing little gasps. It felt as if the air had been inexplicably sucked from the room. Alarming thoughts ran through her mind, "I am going to have a heart attack and make a complete fool of myself!"

Barbara was so concerned about embarrassing herself; the envisioned embarrassment took precedence over her fear of cardiac arrest or dying.

Have you ever felt like Barbara? Is meeting new people or speaking in public extremely painful or, perhaps, just slightly uncomfortable? Many people feel anxious in these situations, some individuals are terrified or miserable - or both. Are you painfully shy or are you clinically shy - called Social Phobia? Both are exceptionally treatable.

This test will indicate the breadth of your shyness, according to your perception. It will not offer a diagnosis. That must come from a qualified professional after he or she invests the time necessary to understand your situation.
