Do You Color Outside the Lines?
Published on May 1, 2008
When solving a problem at work (or at home), how do you approach the problem? There are no prefect techniques or approaches; often we benefit from a team of different personalities to gain the advantages each brings to the endeavor. What would you bring? What is your approach? The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect, but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves. — Carl Jung
What is coloring outside the lines, creativity, intelligence, flexibility? According to Robert Harris,
Creativity is ... an attitude: the ability to accept change and newness, a willingness to play with ideas and possibilities, a flexibility of outlook, the habit enjoying the good, while looking for ways to improve it.Bloom's Taxonomy describes creative thinking as
...the skills of flexibility, originality, fluency, elaboration, brainstorming, modification, imagery, associative thinking, attribute listing, metaphorical thinking, and forced relationships. That certainly clears it up for me.
Do you color outside the lines? Have you been told that you are creative, imaginative or a free thinker? Perhaps you have been called a rebel, unconventional or eccentric. Let's find out how imaginative you are.
