Career Quizzes, Tests & Advice

In a recent survey by career services firm Drake Beam & Morin, 61% of candidates landed positions through networking. Think about this, 10 times as many job seekers are employed through networking than through the newspaper ads or the Internet job sites, such as Career Builders and Monster Jobs. Also, and this is a eye-opener, 80% of job openings never make it job boards or the newspaper. Many Internet job sites retrieve at lease some of their openings from newspapers. Therefore, if jobs don't make the classifieds those jobs will probably not be available to the average job seeker. What can you do about this? Again, network every day. Let all of your friends, family members, neighbors--EVERYONE--know you are looking.

Recently, to illustrate this point, when I was looking for shoes in a local national department store, the shoe clerk mentioned that he was interested in a career in law enforcement. I happened to know of a small department with a couple of openings and, luckily for him, they were willing to send the right candidate through the Police Academy. I passed that information on to him.

Tell everyone what you are looking for--you just never know.
