Are You Healthy Food Savvy?

Published on March 20, 2011

OK, let's begin this discussion of food with a truism, "Eating is highly recommended." We can all agree that food is absolutely essential and blissfully enjoyable. You spoon-in mom's chicken soup when you are stricken by a nasty cold. Friend Emmy's pecan pie is just the thing as a "down in the dumps" mood elevator.

And, let's not forget the great fries that accompany your fast food burger. These foods are comforting and soothing. One of them is also healthful. University of Nebraska researcher, Dr. Stephen Rennard proclaimed the curative value of grandma's favorite home remedy in a medical journal, "The present study, therefore, suggests that chicken soup may contain a number of substances with beneficial medicinal activity."( 1) Your "nutritious food IQ" is probably your most important tool if you strive to live long and prosper.

Are you an expert at choosing nourishing foods? Do you know which foods encourage good health, increase your energy level, improve your mood and/or enhance your natural beauty? You should also be aware of the foods that momentarily nurture your emotional needs, yet diminish your wellness if you overindulge. I have no intention of dissuading you from savoring the occasional piece of yummy chocolate cake or a bag of chips—though, I must stress the word occasional.

Let's take the test and learn more about your food facts. Mark each question with a "Y" for yes or an "N" for no.
